PERIYAR NATIONAL PARK (THEKKADY)

  WHERE TO STAY

You can stay either inside the Park in Thekkady or in Kumili town which lies just outside the park. Rates normally vary between the season and the non-season, with the non-season rates around 30% lower. All rates indicated here are for the season (December - May).

  INSIDE THE PARK

There are 3 hotels inside the park, all run by the KTDC (www.ktdc.com).

The Lake Palace (Tel: +91-0486- 322023) is a deluxe wildlife heritage hotel. Located deep inside the forest, this used to be a summer palace of the Maharaja of Travancore

in earlier days. Surrounded by the lake on three sides, you can view the wild life from the steps to the hotel or from your rooms. If you can afford the price tag (Rs 7500 for a double on full board basis), you can have a fascinating experience in a unique jungle palace.

The other two KTDC hotels inside the Park are Aranya Nivas (Tel: +91-0486- 322023) and Periyar House (Tel: +91-0486-322026). Aranya Nivas, an erstwhile hunting lodge of the Maharaja, is now a

luxury hotel with 3 star comforts (Rs 3000-5000 for a double on American Plan, depending on type of room).

Periyar House is more functional, but is excellent value for money with its clean rooms, freshly cooked food and 5 minute walk to the boat jetty. At Rs 1000-2000 for a double (on American Plan), you can stretch your stay longer. If you are creative, instead of a 4 day stay in Aranya Nivas, you could stay 3 days at Periyar House and 1 day at the Lake Palace at the same cost !

Bokings for all the 3 hotels can be made through the KTDC website or by telephone. No advance payments are required normally.

  IN KUMILI

There are a number of hotels in Kumili for differing budgets.

At the premium end (above Rs 4000 for a double) are Taj Garden Retreat (Tel: +91-0486- 322041), part of the Taj Group of hotels(www.tajhotels.com) and Spice Village (Tel: +91-0486- 322314), part of the Casino group of hotels. Both have excellent reviews in travel magazines and some of our friends who have stayed in them recount very satisfying experiences.

Hotel Ambadi (Tel: +91-0486-322193) is in the medium range (Rs 500-1000).

In the lower budget category (below Rs 500) are Regent Tower, Rolex, Lake Queen and a few more hotels.
