NAGARHOLE (Rajiv Gandhi National Park)

  WHAT TO DO

  MAIN ATTRACTIONS

Nagarhole is a large park and offers the visitor a number of spectacular safari routes into the forests. This increases the chances of spotting wildlife as the concentration of vehicles on any route is low. The Sanctuary web site talks of some of the more exciting routes that one can take : Mule-Hole river, banks of Kabini River, Nagarhole Tourism zone, Nagaraja Game Road, Kabini Reservoir, Karapura lake, etc. Please talk to your

guide or to the wildlife office and ascertain movement of animals to make the best possible choice, or try all the routes if you are staying long enough.

All resorts offer safari rides in their own vehicles, with one or two rides a day normally being part of the package. One can also take the safari rides offered by the Forest department.

The park also has a few observation towers which can be booked at the Forest department office.

Nagarhole has the reputation of having very good forest guides and few tourists have come back disappointed. Some recommended spots for good sightings are Kabini and Mule-hole river banks (elephants), Kabini reservoir (gaur and otters) and Karapura road (leopards). Our friends have also seen huge herds of elephants in Karapura lake in summer.

One can take a ride in a "coracle" ( a local country boat) in Karapura lake and view the abundant bird life in the lake.

No walking or trekking is allowed inside the park as this is tusker country, and these are said to be particularly ferocious in Nagarhole.

  OTHER ATTRACTIONS

The Kabini river lodge offers boats rides on Kabini river. The resort also has a few pedal boats which the visitors can use.

Visit the ‘khedda’ site at Karapura and the elephant camp at Balle. Khedda is the ancient method of capturing wild elephants which is no longer used.

Other attractions for sight-seeing are the Tibetan monastery (12 kms), Iruppu falls (30 kms) and tribal settlements nearby.

Some resorts also offer camping and trekking facilities. Please check with your resort for details, and make sure that these activities are done with prior permission of the park authorities.
